Snack F**k no Series | スナックファック のシリーズ
What started as a fun little streaming project for Huevember 2021 became a huge exploration into a style that I was unfamiliar with, especially in the realm of 3D. Taking inspiration from digital oil paintings and iridescent art, I embarked on an adventure that took me two months to complete!

One of the key techniques in creating the iridescent look was to manipulate the HDRI that was going to light the scene. Changing the colors of the HDRI and adding procedural painterly strokes over them gave the specular materials an extra level of detail and color.

Btw, I got prints for these now! Check it out: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/yattytheman/
Around the same time as this project, procreate just released a new update which included painting onto 3D models. I couldn't resist the opportunity, and implemented it as part of the style. It was very easy to achieve the painterly style, especially with scribbles and my terrible illustration skills.
Procreate wasn't only used to create color, but also custom emissions and speculars. Since some of the lighting wasn't the exact way I wanted it to be on the model, painting the specular on was a lot easier to control (especially on glass material).

For the more oil painterly style, I surrounded the models with area lights, to make it seem like there are intentional "paint strokes" on the piece.
It goes without saying that compositing is the most important final touch to the animations. I needed the shine to glow as hard as possible, just to accentuate the iridescent look I was going for.

When hunting for references, I also found that backgrounds tend to be less detailed and more blotchy. To emulate that, I used particular and sourced the render as a layer emitter, to create this ethereal flowy paint blotch stuff.
While doing this live on stream, I wanted to interject some of my childhood, with snacks and influence from Japanese pop culture (hence the anime-style opening as a compilation of all these individual pieces).

BUT in my search for my childhood, I found myself inadvertently fishing the more juvenile side... and started adding dick jokes, swear words and things that only a 15 year old boy would find hilarious... let's be real, I found these hilarious to this day.

Did I do it just to entertain my audience while streaming? Or was it repressed in my mind only to be set free? Either way, I embraced the subtle nods to stupid humor, and it became a crucial part of this series. You'll find Easter eggs all around the place, and if you know a little bit of Japanese, you'll get a kick out of the translations.
Thank you for enjoying this project! And thank you to all the people who joined live on stream. Without you guys this wouldn't have been nearly as good, and I'm so glad you joined the ride.

Here are some 4K stills to leave off with, enjoy!
